Scottish research settlement aids top universities

The Scottish Funding Council has changed its funding formula to distribute its research block grant entirely on the basis of work that scored 3* or 4* in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

Announcing indicative funding levels for the forthcoming 2012-13 academic year just before Christmas, the SFC said it would allocate three times as much funding for 4* work as for 3* work, with none at all for 2* and 1* research. This academic year, the SFC has been supporting 2* work and in previous years it even backed 1* work, in an attempt to spread support widely across universities.
