Astronomers’ plan for Hawaii telescope in danger

Plans to keep a UK-run telescope based in Hawaii open for a further year are under threat.

Work at the UK Infrared Telescope on Mauna Kea was originally due to finish in September 2013. But a group of 12 UK universities had each pledged £10,000 towards keeping it going until 2014 when another UK telescope on the island, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, is also due to cease operations.
