Martin Rees, the astronomer royal, former Conservative science minister William Waldegrave and physicist Brian Cox have all endorsed a call from the Campaign for Science and Engineering for the government to invest the expected £4 billion proceeds from auctioning off the 4G mobile spectrum back into science. CaSE and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts are leading the campaign and argue that since the “windfall” is a result of past investments in science and technology, it should be put back into these areas.
