Chancellor’s science boost welcomed, but department cuts cause concern

Chancellor George Osborne’s £600 million investment in science infrastructure, announced in his autumn statement on 5 December, has been widely welcomed by learned societies, research councils and university groups.

However, there was speculation that cuts in other areas could have adverse effects on research and education.
