Twelve groups bid to take over UKIRT

A UK-run telescope based in Hawaii, which was scheduled to stop operating in September 2013, may have a new lease of life.

The Joint Astronomy Centre, which runs the UK Infrared Telescope on Mauna Kea, announced on 19 December that it has received 12 expressions of interest from groups wishing to take over operation of the telescope from the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
