Universities silent on future of Scotland’s education secretary amid resignation calls

Scotland’s universities have declined to say if they still have confidence in the country’s education secretary Michael Russell, who is facing calls to resign.

Research Europe’s sister publication Research Fortnight contacted each university in Scotland to ask if it still supported Russell, who was forced to apologise for having misled the Scottish parliament on figures for funding of further education colleges last week. Despite being offered the option of responding anonymously, all but one institution declined to do so. “Politicians are politicians and we’ll work with whoever is the education secretary,” one spokesman responded.
