Bioscientists unite to defend changes to animal research laws

Bioscientists and animal rights groups are in dispute over planned changes to laws on the use of animals in research. Researchers hope the changes, made possible by a move to bring UK laws in line with those of the European Union, will reduce the regulation burden that comes with using animals in research. Animal rights groups oppose the changes.

The UK has some of the world’s strictest rules on animal research, which are set be revised as the UK transposes the 2010 EU Animal Research Directive into UK law by January 2013.
