According to Melanie Phillips, The Daily Mail’s Queen of Sound Reasoning, choosing Les Ebdon to lead the Office for Fair Access means that, like a naughty school boy, business secretary Vince Cable shouldn’t be allowed to play with universities anymore. Responsibility should instead pass to the “courteous” Michael Gove, says Mel. The fact that Ebdon’s crime—of threatening to stop universities “from charging the maximum tuition fee of £9,000 a year if they don’t do enough to meet targets for boosting the number of students from less well-off backgrounds”—is practically in the job description is presumably neither here nor there. It almost makes you miss the days of ‘benefit-cheats cause cancer’ stories.
