Small firms get little R&D support from government

Small and medium-sized businesses in the UK receive the lowest proportion of government support for R&D of all its competitor countries, a report by the Council for Industry and Higher Education and the UK Innovation Research Centre has said. Just 7 per cent of UK government-financed R&D business spending went on small firms in 2009, compared with more than 50 per cent in Finland and South Korea and more than 25 per cent in Germany, the report says.
