Budget: £100m extra for capital projects

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has confirmed that £75 million of a £100m fund for capital projects in research, announced in the 21 March budget, will be money redirected from BIS programmes outside the science budget. The remaining £25m will come from the Treasury. The UK-wide fund, to be managed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, will accept its first bids in 2012–13. Chancellor George Osborne also announced plans to set up a £60m UK centre for aerodynamics to develop and commercialise aerospace technology. The Technology Strategy Board said it will also invest £50m in high-growth fields that do not warrant a ‘catapult’ centre, the last of which were announced in the budget (see News, page 5, via link below).
