Scotland considers extending clinical trial rules
The Scottish government’s chief scientist has launched a consultation on whether doctors and ethics committees should be allowed to consent to research on behalf of incapacitated patients whose representatives are not available. The law allows incapacitated patients to take part in most research only with consent from their guardian. The proposals suggest extending special rules, which currently apply only to drug trials, to all research.
