UK universities have seen their income rise steadily from £21.3 billion to £27.6bn over the past five years but the proportion coming from industry accounts for just 1.1 per cent of the total, data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency shows.
Figures from the agency’s annual publication HE Finance Plus reveal that universities’ total income rose by 29.6 per cent between 2006-7 and 2010-11. However, research grant and contract income from commercial companies and public corporations fell from 1.4 per cent to 1.1 per cent of the total over the same period.
