UK falls in EU patent filing

The number of UK patents filed at the European Patent Office decreased by 9 per cent last year, EPO data shows. The fall is partly due to a decline in patenting in pharmaceuticals, computer technology and transport and reflects a wider fall in the positions of UK companies in the EPO’s 2011 ranking. Unilever, at number 49, was the only UK company to feature. Siemens, of Germany, topped the list.
