Welsh uni merger ‘an attack on academic freedom’

Plans to merge three Welsh universities are an attack on “fundamental principles of university freedom”, the former head of the Magna Charta Observatory of Fundamental University Values, has told Wales Online.

In a statement last November, Welsh education minister Leighton Andrews said he was “minded to accept” advice from the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales that backed merging Glamorgan, Newport and Cardiff Metropolitan universities to create a “true metropolitan university” in the area.
