Plans for nuclear fast reactor at Sellafield revealed

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has signed a contract for a feasibility study on building a fast reactor to burn plutonium waste at Sellafield in Cumbria, The Independent has reported.

The deal was signed by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and GE-Hitachi. It intends to investigate whether GE-Hitachi’s “Prism fast reactor” could remove the plutonium waste directly rather than converting it into mixed oxide nuclear fuel.
