UK doctor resigns over research fraud

UK-born ophthalmologist Peter Francis has resigned from Oregon Health and Science University's Casey Eye Institute after being accused of making fraudulent claims in his applications for two research grants, The Guardian newspaper reports.

The US Office of Research Integrity summoned Francis to explain two grant applications for federal funds he made to the National Eye Institute. He claimed he had injected retinal pigment epithelial cells obtained from rhesus monkey embryonic cells into a genetically modified strain of rats that would go on to develop retinal degeneration.
