Universities and charities lose out on gifts as UK government seeks to raise tax take

A UK government decision to limit the size of donations to charities and universities that are eligible for tax relief could seriously disturb research and higher education funding, campaigners are warning.

The change, announced in last month’s budget, limits the amount on which higher-rate taxpayers can claim tax relief to £50,000 (€61,000) or 25 per cent of their income, whichever is higher, from April 2013.
