Call to boost quality of research into sports

The National Sports and Exercise Medicine Centre of Excellence, set up as part of the Olympic legacy, needs to be strengthened and should have a sport and exercise science strategy for the next five years, the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee has said in a report on health and the Olympic legacy, published on 18 July. The centre was established with hubs in London, Loughborough and Sheffield funded by a one-off capital investment of £30 million from the Department of Health. The report says the centre lacks a long-term strategy, continued funding and leadership to improve the quality of sports research.
