Civil service reform is Walport’s first big challenge, says Cambridge policy director

Plans to reform the civil service represent both a threat and an opportunity for Mark Walport when he starts as the government’s chief scientific adviser, writes Rob Doubleday, executive director of the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Science and Policy.

Writing on the Campaign for Science and Engineering’s blog, Doubleday says much of the discussion about Walport’s in tray has focused on science outside government. However, Walport will also work with thousands of scientists and engineers who work in the civil service.
