Higgs boson tops hottest publications chart

A paper on the Higgs boson was the most highly cited individual scientific paper published in 2012, according to Thomson Reuters.

Combined Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson by Aad et al received a total of 202 citations during the year. It tops the Hottest Research List, published by Thomson Reuters on 6 June. The ranking is based on citations during 2012 for papers published between 2010 and 2012. Papers on the Higgs boson account for nearly one-fifth of the 51 papers featured in this year’s list.

The ranking also includes individual scientists, and names Richard Wilson, a professor of genetics at Washington University in St Louis, United States, as the top researcher based on citations. Two of the top researchers for 2012 are from UK institutions: Zidong Wang, a professor of dynamical systems and computing at Brunel University, and cardiologist Gregory Lip from the University of Birmingham.
