Dowling among academics honoured in New Year list

Royal Academy of Engineering president Ann Dowling and inventor James Dyson are among more than 80 academics and engineers recognised in the 2016 New Year honours list.

Dowling and Dyson have both received Orders of Merit, which are awarded by the Queen for exceptional service to the advancement of the arts, learning, literature and science and are limited to 24 living recipients.

In addition to Dowling, who received the honour for services to mechanical engineering, and Dyson, for his work in industrial design, the Order of Merit was also awarded to Ara Darzi, professor of surgery at Imperial College London, for services to medicine.
