Portrait of a nation

On 23 November, the Economic and Social Research Council released the first full set of data from Understanding Society, its longitudinal study of 100,000 people across 40,000 UK households. Laura Hood asked principle investigator Nick Buck what makes the project so groundbreaking.

What is Understanding Society?

Understanding Society is a longitudinal study funded by the ESRC and the Large Facilities Capital Fund. It is designed to go on for decades to produce detailed data about 40,000 households across the UK. This will be made available for use by researchers across a variety of disciplines. We are now releasing data from the first wave, which covers January 2009 to December 2010, and we will release wave two data at this time next year.
