Medical academy joins impact factor critics

The UK's Academy of Medical Sciences has announced its support for the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment, which challenges the use of journal impact factors as the primary means for evaluating science.

The academy has said that it will soon be changing “various documents” that are associated with its grants schemes and fellowship nominations, to bring them in line with the declaration.

This decision follows that of the Royal Society, which signed up to the declaration in October.
