First female president for engineering academy

Mechanical engineer Ann Dowling has been nominated by the council of the Royal Academy of Engineering to be its next president.

Dowling, head of the University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, has has worked at the university since she began there as a research fellow in 1977.

She will be presented as the council’s nomination for president at the academy’s annual meeting in September, when she is due to take over the role from John Parker.
