The Wellcome Trust has joined other European foundations in an intitative to fund global social science research.
Wellcome announced on 26 November that it would collaborate with the Volkswagen Foundation in Germany and the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Science to tackle global problems such as food security, pandemics and economic instability.
Funding is aimed at social scientists, but teams of researchers from different areas, such as public health and ecology, are encouraged. The Wellcome Trust said that the majority of the researchers should ideally be working outside Europe, but that at least one principal investigator from Germany, Sweden or the UK was recommended.
