The Scottish Association for Marine Science has announced that Nicholas Owens, who studied for a PhD in Scotland, is to be its next director.
Owens completed a PhD in biological oceanography at the University of Dundee in 1979. Since then, he has worked at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the University of Newcastle and the British Antarctic Survey. At present he is the director of the Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science in Plymouth and professor of ocean science at the University of Plymouth.
Owens will take on the SAMS role from 1 September. He succeeds Laurence Mee, who died suddenly in August 2014.
