The City of London Corporation has bought Smithfield Market from property developer TH Real Estate, paving the way for the Museum of London to proceed with its proposed relocation.
The museum, which in December 2014 unveiled a £70-million plan to move from the Barbican to the site of the historic meat market, said in a statement that the building had been bought for £35m.
“The Museum of London welcomes the news that the City of London Corporation has purchased the Smithfield Quarter from TH Real Estate. This makes way for us to achieve our ambition to create a new museum for London and Londoners in West Smithfield by 2021,” a spokeswoman from the museum said in an email to Research Fortnight.
