The Wellcome Trust has set up an expert panel to evaluate requests from scientists to access data from industry-sponsored clinical trials.
Requests for data can be made through the clinicalstudydatarequest.com website, which was created by GlaxoSmithKline in 2013 and now includes data from 13 other pharmaceutical companies.
The Wellcome Trust is responsible for administering requests from scientists for anonymised patient data. These requests will now be approved by a review panel of five members, led by Jeffrey Koplan, president for global health at Emory University. Panel members, who will be paid, are not employees of the trust or the companies involved.
