Blackwood to take part in science pairing scheme

Junior health minister Nicola Blackwood is again taking part in the Royal Society’s 2016 Pairing Scheme that will see UK scientists spending a week with parliamentarians and civil servants in Westminster.

The scheme, supported by the Government Office for Science, pairs scientists with parliamentarians and civil servants to explore how research findings can inform policymaking and so they can “learn about each other’s worlds”.

From 28 November to 1 December the academics will attend seminars and panel discussions about how evidence is used in policymaking and take part in a mock select committee to show how they can share their expertise with policymakers. The scheme also offers parliamentarians and civil servants the opportunity to investigate the science behind their decisions and aims to enhance their access to scientific evidence.
