The Royal Society is working with other organisations to improve the mathematics syllabus taught in schools, in a bid to increase the percentage of pupils studying maths up to the age of 18.
The Mathematics Curricula Futures project will consider the need to boost teaching of data science in schools, in response to technological progress, and what mathematical skills students need later in life to succeed in industry, government and higher education.
Frank Kelly, a professor of mathematics systems at the University of Cambridge and chair of the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education, will lead the two-year project, which also involves the Royal Statistical Society, the London Mathematical Society and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
