Funding boost drives record engineering fellowship numbers

The Royal Academy of Engineering has appointed 18 research fellows, who will investigate topics ranging from affordable solar power in rural India to fibre-optic gyroscopes.

Each of the 18 fellows will receive five years of funding to carry out their project.

The academy has never previously awarded more than 17 fellowships in one of its funding rounds, which usually occur annually, and numbers are normally much lower than that. But due to additional funding from the government through the Investment in Research Talent initiative, it awarded a record number of fellowships on 14 August.
