Research world outlines wish list ahead of spending review

Changes to R&D tax credits and an increase in quality-related research funding are on research and business groups’ wish list for next week’s government spending announcement.

On 27 August, chancellor Sajid Javid confirmed that the government would reveal its plans for 2019-20 spending on 4 September. A long-planned multi-year review of government spending has been delayed to next year.

Ahead of Javid’s announcement, research and business groups were already ramping up their lobbying activities and putting the focus on the government’s target of spending 2.4 per cent of GDP on R&D by 2027.
