Athena SWAN awards axed from NIHR funding requirement

Leaders of Athena SWAN Charter promise it will stay relevant despite being dropped by funder

Advance HE, the body behind the Athena SWAN Charter, has said its scheme will remain “an unrivalled evidence base” on commitment to equality after the government severed the link between Athena SWAN accreditation and funding.

The Charter recognises higher education institutions’ commitment to gender equality in research, but it will no longer be used to inform funding grants by a major healthcare funder, the National Institute for Health Research.
