Invest in AI research to avoid becoming ‘Backwater Britain’

Demos and Jisc report explores opportunities and dangers of artificial intelligence in UK research sector

There is a risk the UK’s research sector will become “Backwater Britain” by 2040 if there is not enough funding invested in new technologies such as artificial intelligence, a report has suggested.

In a final report on AI in research published on 15 September, written by researchers Ben Glover, Elliot Jones and Rob Procter, the think tank Demos and IT firm Jisc set out five possible scenarios for the UK’s research sector in 2040.
