Patent lawsuit fears overblown, says NHS researcher

Fears that NHS hospitals may increasingly face lawsuits for carrying out tests based on patented DNA techniques are exaggerated, Gail Norbury, commissioning and governance director of the Genetics Laboratories at Guy’s Hospital in London, has said.

Norbury spoke to Research Fortnight Today a few days after the launch of a report by the Human Genetics Commission, published on 5 August. The report warned that NHS hospitals “routinely infringe” intellectual property on DNA-based patents and that guidance on licensing laws must be firmed up.
