Drug industry groups want joined-up dementia support

Leaders of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and the UK Bioindustry Association have called for more joined-up support for dementia, involving industry, in the wake of the G8 summit on the condition.

In a statement on 11 December, the day the summit was held in London, ABPI chief executive Stephen Whitehead and BIA chief executive Steve Bates both said that they welcomed the UK government’s commitment to supporting research in the life sciences and in dementia in particular.

“Whilst we can look back positively at what has been achieved, there are growing challenges that will have to be faced in 2014 and beyond to ensure that the UK remains an attractive place to invest,” said Whitehead. “The pharmaceutical industry, the government and the NHS need to work hand-in-hand, alongside global stakeholders, to ensure patients in the UK can access the innovative, life-changing medicines they need.”
