Scotland lagging in business R&D spending

Figures published by Scotland’s chief statistician show that despite rising spending on business R&D, in 2012 only 4.1 per cent of the £17.1 billion invested in business R&D in the UK was spent in Scotland.

Also, businesses spend only 0.59 per cent of GDP on R&D in Scotland, well below the UK average of 1.09 per cent.

Although Scotland received a relatively low share of business R&D investment, the statistics show that business R&D expenditure in Scotland rose by 2.1 per cent in real terms between 2011 and 2012, in contrast to a real terms decrease of 4 per cent seen across the UK in the same time
