Agricultural researchers should use modern genetic techniques and breeding approaches to improve farming, a report commissioned by five agricultural bodies has said.
Feeding the Future, published on 6 June, aims to assess R&D requirements in farming up to 2030, and identifies eight priority research areas. It will feed into the government’s agri-tech strategy, which was expected in May but has not yet been published.
The report makes five recommendations: funders should establish more joint programmes based on the eight priority areas, government departments should take a more integrated approach to research, and in general there should be a better balance between fundamental and applied science, and better training opportunities for UK researchers. Finally, funders, higher education institutions and government departments should seek greater representation on relevant boards and committees.
