Goldacre pushes for transparency in wake of Tamiflu report

Epidemiologist and author Ben Goldacre has called for legislation to retroactively require the sharing of clinical trials data in the UK.

“Government should ride the wave we have created, and act,” Goldacre said in an article published on The Guardian’s Comment is Free website on 5 January. “There has been more progress on trials transparency in the past 12 months than in the past 25 years.”

Goldacre stressed that UK bodies, such as the Department of Health, need to recognise the importance of the problem. European Union legislation that could be adopted later this year only requires publication of results starting now and so doesn’t help researchers and clinicans evaluate existing therapies, he said.
