Industrial Biotechnology Catalyst receives £40m boost

The Industrial Biotechnology Catalyst is to offer two more rounds of funding after receiving further investment from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Innovate UK.

The BBSRC has invested an extra £20m in the catalyst, and the EPSRC and Innovate UK, formerly the Technology Strategy Board, have put in £10m each. Catalyst funding is now in its second round, which closes on 10 December. The cash injection means that a third and fourth round will take place in 2015.

Funded research projects support industries that use biological processes such as the production of biopharmaceuticals. Celia Caulcott, the BBSRC’s director of innovation and skills, said: “With new and efficient manufacturing using biological processes we can shift away from fossil fuels towards renewable, sustainable approaches.”
