Highly innovative firms are more international and employ more science graduates, a report published by the UK's Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has said.
The UK Innovation Survey: Innovative firms and growth, published on 12 March, looked at the characteristics of highly innovative and less innovative firms.
Among the study’s findings were that highly innovative firms employ a “significantly higher” share of science, technology, engineering and maths graduates. This has a “large positive influence on a range of performance metrics”, including more R&D, more new-to-market products, more external cooperation and greater use of external information. It also demonstrates the importance of investment to produce STEM graduates, the report said.
