UK companies win more patents in Europe

Companies in the UK were granted 2 per cent more patents in 2013 than in 2012, the European Patent Office has announced.

Although the number of patents filed by UK companies fell by 3 per cent in 2013 compared with 2012, more patents were granted to the UK overall. The top three UK patent applicants were Unilever, BAE Systems and Rolls Royce, who applied for 278, 175 and 133 patents respectively in 2013. Samsung was the leading company to apply for patents overall in Europe.

In total, the European Patent Office granted 66,700 patents in 2013, which was a record number.
