Two PhD students, a masters student and a lab technician are among five Britons who have been selected for a shortlist of 100 people who may be chosen for an attempt to become the first humans on Mars.
Hannah Earnshaw, an astronomy PhD student at Durham University, and Maggie Lieu, an astrophysics PhD student at the University of Birmingham, made the cut from 202,586 initial applicants to the selected 100. Ryan Macdonald, a physics masters student at the University of Oxford, Alison Rigby, a lab technician, and ClareWeedon, who works at Virgin Media, round out the selected UK participants.
The selection process was carried out by Mars One, a not-for-profit foundation that aims to establish a permanent human presence on Mars. The shortlist was selected from a pool of 660 people interviewed by Mars One chief medical officer Norbert Kraft. Candidates “had a chance to show their understanding of the risks involved, team spirit and their motivation to be part of this life changing expedition” at the interviews, Mars One said in a press release.
