A government analysis of worldwide patents in 2015 has concluded that the research on graphene continues to have a lack of impact in the UK in terms of applicants and inventors.
Despite relatively low levels of patenting, however, the UK still outperforms France and Germany, according to the analysis, published on 25 March.
It is also too early to tell what effect a £235-million investment by the UK government in an advanced material research centre at the University of Manchester will have on UK patents for graphene. At present, the University of Manchester holds the most patent families in the UK: it has 12, followed by Isis Innovation at the University of Oxford which holds seven.
