The government has allocated £15 million to create a series of quantum technology skills hubs across the UK, in line with a national strategy recommendation to develop the quantum technology workforce.
The announcement of funding for the quantum technology skills hubs from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) came on 23 March—the same day that the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme published its National Strategy for Quantum Technologies.
The strategy makes 10 recommendations, one of which is that the government should “invest in the development of a dynamic workforce that meets the needs of future industry”. The incorporation of quantum technologies into commercial products will require a cadre of engineers with the requisite skills in physics, engineering, photonics, electronics and computer science, the strategy says.
