Recent graduates of UK higher education institutions created 4,603 companies during the 2013-14 academic year, an increase of nearly 1,200 compared with the previous year, according to an analysis by the Higher Education Statistics Agency.
The annual Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey logs any new business started up within two years of graduation, but only where there has been formal business support from a publicly funded higher education provider.
HESA includes data from every UK higher education provider. It counted 11,911 active start-ups and spin-offs with some higher education provider involvement in the UK in 2013-14.
