Smart cities could ‘reclaim’ funding from universities

Joe Dignan, the interim head of business development at the Future Cities Catapult, has predicted that cities “will start to take back the international funding role” they have ceded to academia.

In a blogpost for the Future Cities Catapult on predictions for the year ahead, Dignan says that cities will begin to build up their own funding teams to compete with universities.

“Universities often operate like later day monasteries, claiming the moral high ground while operating as commercial businesses monopolising funding such as European Union structural funds,” he writes. “Cities and local authorities need to rebuild their institutional funding teams to compete. Academics are good at conjuring with wicked problems and that is where they are best directed.”
