Academics are optimistic that a sector deal for the life sciences industry will also benefit their research.
This is one of a series of deals that underpin the government’s industrial strategy. It pulls together a raft of policies to support the life sciences including boosting research in the NHS, ensuring quicker access to new treatments, and scaling up small businesses. It was announced on 6 December along with details of pending investments from 25 organisations.
The deal is good news for the many universities that have been constructing a pipeline from fundamental research to medicines development, said Geraint Rees, dean of life sciences at University College London. “These things can only thrive in ecosystems. Any move to help build the ecosystem will help the overall goal to undertake fundamental research.”
