Prince Charles launches initiative to reduce marine plastic waste

Researchers are being encouraged to bid for a $2-million (£1.5m) innovation prize for creating packaging that keeps plastics out of the oceans.

The competition is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in partnership with the Prince of Wales International Sustainability Unit. The first call for proposals was launched on 18 May by Prince Charles at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

“Plastics since their development roughly a century ago have permanently altered the course of human history,” the prince is quoted as saying in The Daily Telegraph on 18 May. “Because plastics are so durable once they are in the environment, that is where they stay, accumulating at an astonishing rate. This strikes me as a tragedy.
