Pharmaceutical R&D is sidelining a range of critical health needs, according to senior economist Mariana Mazzucato, who is calling for a mission-oriented approach to be applied to public health research.
In a report published on 17 October, Mazzucato and colleagues said the drug R&D system is failing to investigate cures for the diseases that are more prevalent in developing countries, such as tuberculosis.
Mazzucato, who runs the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, called on governments to advocate a mission-oriented approach to improving health outcomes.
